Two examples:
Use Regular Labs Modals extension
https://extensions.joomla.org/extension/modals/
Or JCE Editor combined with their MediaBox plugin for the JCE Editor
https://extensions.joomla.org/extension/jce-mediabox/
You need to be using JCE editor. I think this works with the free version.
To remove the design elements around your article if you don't want them you need I think to add ?tmpl=component to the end of the article URL that opens within the modal, so you get the article only and not the template design elements such as headers, menus, side bars etc.
Backtracking a little to the code you mentioned: here's something similar discussed in this viewtopic.php?t=961945 concerning opening modals in J3 and kind of explains how your code may not work in J5
Another way, if you want to hand-code is to use the method explained at W3schools.com.
